PLDT, the Philippines’ largest telecommunications network announced its plan to bring “ultra-fast†fiber-optic internet connections to a targeted two million homes in the country. The company made the announcement last Wednesday during the launch of its fixed-line network roll-out program. It hopes to install by late 2013 at total of 240,000 access ports where fiber links can be accessed by Filipino homes. Rolando Peña, PLDT-Smart Technology Group Head said the program hopes to make the fiber facilities available to more than two million homes in the country.

Peña further explained that the first phase of their two-year program will cost them P1B which they hope to finish by the end of the year. This phase alone would make available 90,000 fiber optic lines to their subscribers which can serve a million residences. Over 30,000 of these lines have been laid down by the end of September. He said this will provide the fastest data connection to more homes as at present; these services are only available to residents of Forbes Park, Dasmariñas Village and Ayala Alabang Village.
With the 30,000 fiber-optic lines already in place, Peña says that the fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) lines will soon be available to a hundred more villages in Metro Manila and other key-cities in the country.
