Microsoft Announces Price of Surface Tablet at $499

On the same day that Apple sent out its invites to an event to be held on Oct. 23, Microsoft also made an announcement about its latest product, the Surface Tablet. The announcement which came in Tuesday said that from 9am on that day, preorders for Microsoft’s Surface Tablets will be accepted by the software giant at $499 for the 32GB version and $699 for the 64GB version. Orders can be made at Surface.com and will ship on October 26.

The tablet runs on Windows RT and has a built-in kickstand. But it does not come with the 3mm Touch cover for the keypad. It will cost an added $119. A Surface/Touch Cover bundle is available, though at $699.

Microsoft has packed its Surface with features such as a 2GB of RAM, an Nvidia Tegra 3 CPU, an 802.11N Mimo Wi-Fi radio, Bluetooth 4.0, an accelerometer, gyroscope, compass, dual microphones, stereo speakers, an HD-out port, a full-sized USB 2.0 port and a micro SD-slot. It also has 2 cameras, one in front and another at the back, both at 720p each. It is pre-loaded with Microsoft Office Home and Student 2013 RT Preview edition which the software company has tweaked to accommodate the tablets touch-screen interface. On the downside, reports have it that a third of its storage capacity is already taken up by Windows RT, Microsoft Office and other preloaded apps. It will be interesting to watch how it fares against the other tablets in the market.
