The newest iPhone, which could be called the iPhone 5, might carry a 19-pin dock connector as opposed to the current 30-pin dock connector. This rumor started back in February when iMore reported the possible change. In the succeeding months, many reports supported the speculation, including alleged leaked images of the iPhone’s design from China. Most recently, Reuters published an article that points to the existence of the connector.
The effect of the 19-pin connector’s replacement of the old one is that users will no longer be able to connect accessories that fit on the 30-pin connector to the new iPhone. For instance, speakers and power chargers that are used with the older models of the iPhone, iPad, and iPod will not be supported any more.
This could only mean bad news for Apple users who have invested on accessories for their devices. There is a glimmer of hope, however. Apple is also reportedly going to offer an adapter for the 19-pin connector that will allow the devices to use accessories made for the 30-pin connector. Apple might be offering this adaptor, however, for a price. This means that users might have to shoulder the expense brought about by Apple’s decision.
On the flipside, manufacturers of Apple accessories could be rejoicing since the new connector might mean that users could buy new accessories made for the 19-pin dock. This could have its merits, too, since Apple is supposedly going to make the connector available on all future Apple mobile products.
